The AI Election

The U.S. expects an avalanche of fake audio, videos and images in the 2024 election. This session will provide you with tools and tips to help you identify election-related misinformation generated with artificial intelligence. But you don't have to be a fact-checker to call out misleading and false information. We'll show you how using skills you already have can improve credibility and strengthen your reporting.

Amy Sherman
Senior Correspondent at PolitiFact

Amy Sherman is a senior correspondent with PolitiFact based in South Florida. She was part of the team that launched PolitiFact Florida in 2010 and was part of the PolitiFact team during the 2016 election. She previously worked as a staff writer for the Miami Herald and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. A native of Amherst, Mass., she graduated with a history degree from Macalester College in St. Paul.

Ivette Franco
Multimedia Journalist & Fact-Checker

Ivette Franco is a multimedia journalist, fact-checker, and board member of the South Florida chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ). In 2022, she was selected by FIU as a fellow correspondent to cover political issues in Washington, D.C. She currently fact-checks political debates, as well as topics related to the economy, health, and scams, and has served as a fact-checker reporting on midterm elections and State of the Union speeches for elDetector. 

Franco has also contributed to discussions on combating misinformation through her participation in panels at the NAHJ conference. 

Before her career in communication, Franco built a strong background in business, specializing in strategic negotiations and supply chain management for one of the largest quick-service restaurant (QSR) chains in the world. She was nominated as a Change Maker by the Women’s Foodservice Forum.
