Next-Gen Applications 2022

Students!
Thank you for your interest in submitting an application for an NAHJ program! Here are a few tips for completing the applications:
  • There is one form for the scholarships and one form for the internships
  • If you are applying for more than one within each form, you will need more than one essay
  • Different teams of judges will be reviewing the applications

Scholarships

Here’s the information your essay should include for the Rubén Salazar, María Elena Salinas, Luis Gómez and Jonathan Camuy scholarships:
a) Your background
b) The type of journalism you’re interested in
c) Any hardships or obstacles you have experienced while trying to realize your goal of becoming a journalist
d) Your thoughts on diversity in journalism and why it is important to have Latinos in the newsroom

For the scholarships listed below, include your background, what you’re interested in, any obstacles you’ve faced, and also these items:

Facebook Journalism Project NAHJ Scholarship
Intended for students interested in digital storytelling. Your essay should highlight your experience in this area and why you’re interested in it.

NAHJ Ada Lourdes Vigo Afro-Latino Scholarship
This scholarship is for Afro-Latino students. Your essay should address how being Afro-Latino impacts your storytelling, and how Afro-Latinos are currently represented in media.

NAHJ Cecilia Alvear Scholarship/ NAHJ Ana Real Scholarship
These scholarships are intended for students who are interested in working as a producer, editor, etc. Include work you’ve done in this area and why you’re interested in pursuing this path.

NAHJ White House Correspondents’ Association Scholarship
Students should include any experience they have in covering politics and why they’re interested in becoming a White House correspondent.

Internships

  • NAHJ will narrow the list of candidates for internships. Representatives from ABC News, NBC News, CBS News and ESPN will interview the finalists and select the interns
  • If you are applying for more than one internship, you will need to upload an essay for each one
  • If you choose to use the same essay for all the internships, consider tailoring a section of it for each media outlet you’re submitting to

Please be sure to read and follow the instructions. If you still have questions, email the Director of Next Gen. Initiatives, Leslie-Anne Frank, [email protected]. Incomplete applications will be disqualified.

Good luck!
