New Mexico Chapter Board Election 2021

The New Mexico Chapter elections committee opened the ballot to vote on this year's board election on June 7th. Polls close on June 17, at 5 p.m. ET and results will be announced soon after. You can find the finalized list of candidates who appear on the ballot below.

2021 Election Timeline for chapter board elections:

May 17th:  Call for Nominations
May 28thDeadline to submit 1 signature before 11:59 p.m. Deadline to become a member in good standing and be eligible to vote
May 28-31st: Vetting process. The Elections Committee will screen candidates 
May 31stBallot is announced and campaigning begins
June 7th: Online voting begin (Polls open two weeks before the polls close)
June 17th: Polls close at 5 p.m. ET and results are announced 


Candidates Statements:

President (uncontested):
Shelby Perea

I’m running because I believe in the power of words, the people of New Mexico and the mission of NAHJ. Combined, I think we can make a real impact.

Vice President (uncontested):
Elizabeth Sanchez

Elizabeth Sanchez has been an NAHJ NM board member since 2018. Between her sophomore year of high school and her college graduation, she wrote and edited for various local publications. She graduated from the University of New Mexico in 2018 after double majoring in Spanish and Multimedia Journalism. She continues to remain involved in the journalism community through the Media Law Resource Center Next Generation Committee and the UNM Daily Lobo and Student Publications Alumni Chapter. Elizabeth is a current JD student at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and hopes to one day pursue media law endeavors as an attorney. She hopes that as Vice President, she may continue to uplift journalists and maintain her community connections, particularly by supporting Hispanic voices.

Financial Officer (uncontested):
Deyonne Sandoval

Deyonne Sandoval has been a member of NAHJ since 2017 and began serving as a New Mexico chapter officer in late 2020. In addition to journalism and communications Deyonne has a background in grant writing and grant management coupled with experience in program planning and health marketing. She hopes to continue supporting the journalism community by applying her experience in grant management, planning, and marketing toward serving as financial officer/treasurer of the NAHJ New Mexico chapter.
