Our Programs
NAHJ’s list of programs is constantly expanding to meet members’ needs. I am working closely with our academic members to ensure we provide professional training opportunities tailored exclusively to educators, such as navigating educational institutions, teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic, and tips on getting involved in academic fields with a media background.
Our current professional development and student programs include:
-
NAHJ International Training Conference and Career Fair. An annual gathering of thousands of Latino journalists, other journalists of color and industry leaders. The conference includes training sessions, professional development workshops in English and Spanish, networking events, social events, mentoring, job opportunities and much more. Join us virtually this year from June 16 - July 17, 2021 #NAHJ2021 – Register Here.
-
There is also a Student Bootcamp, held prior to the conference, that provides students with training on practical skills like resume writing and interview skills as well as tips for navigating the conference.
-
NAHJ Membership Services offers webinars, e-training and tutorials year-round exclusively designed to benefit NAHJ members nationwide. These programs include the Google News Initiative Digital tools training for Spanish speaking newsrooms, deep-dive webinars on digital security, tips on how to work from home, tools on surviving a layoff, mental health care sessions for professionals and student journalists, specialized e-training for students, among others that are regularly added.
-
Our redesigned, user-friendly Career Center offers opportunities in print, broadcast, online, communications, academic and other media-related fields. Members can also use the site to post their résumés for recruiters.
-
Scholarships – NAHJ has been awarding scholarships, totaling more than $1.72 million, for more than thirty years. In addition to the general scholarship fund, we partner with other individuals and organizations who offer scholarships for particular fields of study.
-
Internships and fellowships – NAHJ partners with several national news organizations that select our students for paid summer internships and fellowships opportunities. They gain experience and contacts that often lead to employment.
-
The NAHJ Student Project is a week-long immersive training experience for students held during the national conference. Students receive hands-on training from mentors who are news veterans and create news in all mediums that is presented on the online site, The Latino Reporter.
- Member newsletter – A monthly digital publication that includes industry news, chapter updates and opportunities.
-
Palabra. – our growing multimedia platform with content by NAHJ freelance members. Through palabra., Latinos are reclaiming ownership of their own narrative.
-
Local Chapters – NAHJ has professional and student chapters throughout the country. Become active at the regional level and build your local support network! NAHJ’s local chapters help tailor professional development sessions to their members’ needs, including everything from new media training to social networking.
-
Media Advocacy – NAHJ continues to remain a strong voice for better news coverage and media access. Efforts have ranged from writing letters to lawmakers in favor of a strong federal shield law, calling on network news companies to improve their racial and ethnic newsroom make-ups and speaking before Congress about further media consolidation that hurt diversity in media ownership.
