2023 NAHJ CHAPTER ELECTIONS: NEW JERSEY

The New Jersey Chapter elections committee is pleased to open the ballot to vote on this year's board election. Polls will close on June 15, at 5 p.m. ET and results will be announced soon after. You can find the list of candidates who appear on the ballot below.

NAHJ professional chapter officers’ general guidelines to keep in mind:

Officers of Professional Chapters 
(a)  Officers. Each professional chapter (i) is required to have a President, a Vice President, a Treasurer and a Secretary and (ii) at the discretion of the Chapter Board also may have a single at-large officer with such responsibilities as the Chapter Board shall determine.
(b)  Qualifications. The offices of President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary may be held only by Regular Members in good standing. Any Regular Member, Academic Member or Associate Member, in good standing, may serve as the at-large officer. 
(c)  Holding Multiple Offices. Any elected officer may concurrently hold two or more offices, except that in no event shall the President serve simultaneously as the Treasurer or the Secretary.

(d)  Election. Chapter officers shall be elected annually. The President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary shall be elected by the Regular Members and the Academics Members of the chapter. The at-large officer, if any, shall be elected by the Regular Members, the Academic Members and the Associate Members of the chapter.

2023 ELECTIONS TIMELINE

• May 12th:  Call for Nominations
• May 26thDeadline to submit 5 unique signatures before 11:59 p.m. Deadline to become a member in good standing and be eligible to vote
• May 29th – 31stVetting process. The Elections Committee will screen candidates. 
• June 1st: Online voting begins (Polls open two weeks before the polls close)
• June 15th: Polls close at 5 p.m. ET and results are announced.

Manuel Avendaño

Manuel E. Avendaño was born in Lima, Perú, in 1955 and he has been a journalist in the United States for almost 40 years. He studied Journalism at the San Marcos University in Lima (1974), after studying Electronic Engineering (1972) at the National School of Technical Engineering (ENIT) and National University of Engineering (UNI). After working for several publications in his country, in 1980 he founded his own magazine, KARATE INTERNATIONAL.

In 1985, he emigrated to the United States and that same year published his first newspaper article, in English, "Hispanics Find Garden State Replete with Roses and Thorns” in the North Jersey Herald News of New Jersey. In 1986, he started as a reporter at EL DIARIO/LA PRENSA in New York, where he served as Metro Editor, Night Editor and Managing Editor until 2016. In 1998, he was the founder-director of the Spanish daily newspaper HOY (Today) in New York.

In 2005, he was honored as "Media Person of the Year" by the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of NJ (SHCCNJ). In 2007 he received a Proclamation of Honor for his record of journalism service, given by the New York City Council. In 2015, Avendaño received a recognition from the Congress of the United States for his 30 years of journalistic career in the USA. In 2017, he was hired as Newswriter by Noticiero 47 at Telemundo TV network.

Now, Avendaño is working for his own Nuestra Gente Digital (NuestraGenteDigital.com) and for the TV shows NuestraGenteEnTV and PeruviansTVnewyork on Paterson Cable Channel 75 and FIOS Verizon Channel 33. He has published “Ladrón de Corazones” ("Thief of Hearts"), as part of the book “Cuentos Locos” ("Crazy Tales"). He is president of the New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ).

Después de haber atravesado una Pandemia donde muchos seres amados y colegas perdieron la vida nuestro compromiso con informar oportunamente debe ser aún mayor por eso desde NAHJ Chapter New Jersey vamos a seguir concretando alianzas con todas las fuentes de información pertinentes para mantener comunicada a nuestra comunidad latina, para acceder a apoyos para nuestros colegas dueños de empresas periodísticas y para nuestros jóvenes que se integren a las salas de redacción.

Como Vicepresidente seguiré apoyando las iniciativas de expansión y crecimiento de mis colegas así mismo seguiremos haciendo alianza con la unidad de prensa del Gobernador. Siempre hay trabajo por hacer pero en la unidad del gremio periodístico es donde está la fuerza.
