Candidates Statements:

President (uncontested):
Brandon Lopez
Brandon Lopez has held the position of President for NAHJ South Florida for nearly three years. Over the course of his presidency, alongside his board, he has produced successful and helpful programming for the chapter’s members. Additionally, he has worked to revamp the chapter’s internal operations and has improved its communication by boosting the chapter’s social media presence and implementing a monthly e-mail blast. Most recently, he led the chapter through COVID-19, where he worked to provide members resources on coping with mental health issues while navigating the pandemic. He looks forward to serving another term as president of the chapter, offering unique programming to its members, and boosting membership in the South Florida area.

At-Large (uncontested):
Pilar Portela
Currently Pilar Portela is NAHJ South Florida Chapter's Honorary Board Member and was Conference Chair at NAHJ’s 2018 Miami Conference. She was Director of Sponsorships and Events in 2019/2020 and is running again for the same position. Since the National NAHJ Convention in June 2010, Pilar has been actively involved with establishing the NAHJ South Florida Chapter by helping to coordinate meetings and events; by increasing local NAHJ awareness and membership, and by getting major sponsorships for chapter events and conferences. For 10 years she has also been actively involved with the Chapter's Annual Holiday Charity Mixers and Charity Drives (books and college scholarships). In the role of Director of Sponsorships and Events she intends to continue to be a big part of the Chapter Committees not only with sponsorships and events but also with membership drives and fundraisers.
